“This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” (Matthew 6:9)
Once I was asked to consider how much I looked like my father. The question causes us to consider not only the human aspects or the physical qualities of a father but also, to consider the interior ones like their heroic confidence in those unsettling, not so quiet storms in our lives or those special virtues and values that hallmark a father’s unwavering faith, gentle kindness and humble acts of charity. We might even want to consider such virtuous acts and actions like lending a helping hand or extending an outstretched arm to the poor, the helpless, a neighbor, or family members in moments of urgent circumstances and situations. We honor our fathers for those special moments they looked very much like our heavenly Father who reminds us through his beloved Son to be kind and merciful like our heavenly Father, to be mutually loving and forgiving like our heavenly Father, and to be patient and generous like our heavenly Father. We offer a prayer of gratitude and blessing to fathers for caring and providing the foundational support and spiritual guidance we needed to help us along the way. For being with us in prayer and spirit when a task or job kept you away, for your smile but mostly, for the grace when you most looked like our heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally every moment of the day. Happy Father’s Day.
